Reunification Therapy
Reunification therapy supports families who are navigating conflict, estrangement, or a breakdown in the parent–child relationship. At Izzo Therapy in San Mateo and San Carlos, our licensed clinicians provide structured, compassionate guidance to help children and parents safely rebuild trust, strengthen communication, and restore connection.
Whether caused by separation, divorce, past conflict, or long periods without contact, reunification therapy offers a supportive path toward healing and healthier family relationships.

Reunification therapy is a specialized therapeutic process designed to repair and rebuild the relationship between a parent and child. The therapist provides a neutral, supportive environment where each family member can express their experiences, emotions, and needs while working toward improved understanding and safety.
This structured approach focuses on stability, healthy boundaries, emotional regulation, and rebuilding secure attachment — at a pace that is appropriate for the child.

Reunification therapy often includes:
-
Individual sessions with the child
-
Individual sessions with the parent(s)
-
Joint parent–child sessions
-
Parent coaching and guidance
-
Co-parenting support when appropriate
-
Structured, therapist-guided interactions
Every family moves through reunification differently. Our clinicians carefully assess readiness, provide trauma-informed support, and prioritize the emotional and physical safety of the child above all else.

Reunification therapy may be recommended when families are experiencing:
-
Estrangement or prolonged separation
-
High-conflict or complicated custody situations
-
Difficulty rebuilding trust after conflict or miscommunication
-
Resistance to visitation or parent–child contact
-
Emotional disconnection following divorce or major transitions
-
Past ruptures that have impacted the relationship
Our therapists work with families to create a calm, structured environment where children can safely reconnect with a parent, process emotions, and establish new patterns of communication.

Parent involvement is a core part of reunification therapy. Depending on the family’s needs, this may include:
-
Parenting tools and emotional regulation strategies
-
Education on child development and trauma-informed communication
-
Support for co-parenting when safe and appropriate
-
Guidance on creating a stable, supportive home environment
-
Practicing new ways to respond to the child’s needs
Reunification is a gradual process designed to build long-term stability and healthier family relationships.

Reunification therapy at Izzo Therapy is provided by clinicians trained in family systems, attachment, trauma-informed care, and conflict resolution. Sessions are available in person in San Mateo and San Carlos, with some components available through telehealth when clinically appropriate.
