Why Family Therapy Matters for Youth and Young Adults

Family therapy plays a vital role in supporting teens and young adults in treatment. New research shows that when families participate in therapy—even just one session—young clients are more likely to stay in care longer, complete treatment, and stay engaged throughout the process.

In remote intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), family involvement has a direct impact:

  • Dropout rates decrease

  • Length of stay increases

  • Treatment completion rates improve

These findings underscore what many clinicians already know — involving the family leads to better outcomes. When young people are surrounded by understanding and supportive caregivers, they’re more likely to receive the full benefits of therapy.

Family therapy enhances connection, improves communication, and builds a foundation for continued growth after treatment ends. Strengthening this support system can make all the difference in a young person’s recovery journey — whether they’re facing anxiety, depression, school stress, or other mental health challenges.

As more care moves into virtual spaces, bolstering family involvement is a powerful way to ensure youth and young adults get the depth and consistency of care they need to thrive.
